Today, fashion model Jasmine Sanders, is becoming the face of a new generation of models. Well known across social media as ‘Golden Barbie,’ she hails from Columbia, South Carolina and after 11 years in the industry, she’s finding just the right balance between urban and high fashion modeling.
Her modeling career began at age 13 after being scouted by Millie Lewis Columbia in Columbia, South Carolina. At age 14 she graced the pages of Vogue, Seventeen, Lucky, Galore, and covered the billboards in Times Square.
With her golden curly locs and eyes that shift from green to blue (depending on the light), she was recently named the face of Moroccanoil’s new curl-focused line of products.
Breaking down barriers in the fashion world where one’s racial and ethnic background can be seen as an obstacle, Sanders is having a major moment in her career right now. She tells Kiah McBride, “I’m just happy to see clients that normally go in a certain box break out of that, because it’s been so much of the cookie cutter, everybody looks the same, and I’m like the world is not going to be like that. Look and see how many people are mixed up now, you have to sell to everyone.”
Not long after Sanders found herself modeling for high end fashion, she was plagued with rumors of dating numerous celebrities. But Sanders discounts a lot of the rumors in a recent article and credits her father for keeping her grounded by not allowing her to fall prey to the industry.
“Half of the people that they say I dated I didn’t at all. I have a black dad that was in the military and raised southern, and he’s not having me run around with half of these rappers who ya’ll see me with. Obviously I was there for a reason or hanging out. It’s too much.”
The German and African-American, multi-cultured beauty is officially in a relationship with former E! News Host Terrence J. The couple had been secretly dating since March of this year, but took their relationship public sometime in October.
At one point Jasmine Sanders, the ‘Golden Barbie’ was once deemed an urban model, but now she is finding just the right balance between urban and high fashion. She has actually used her cred as an alluring social media sensation to carve out her particular period in history and showcase her ideas and beliefs.
Sanders credits social media with giving models a real voice. And with an Instagram account with over 2 Million followers, her voice is being heard across the digital divide.
“Social media allows us to show everyone that there’s more beyond the supposed glitz and glam of the industry. We have the power to share what we truly love and what makes us happy,” she says.
After over 11 years in the modeling industry, Sanders is finally seeing all her hard work pay off. She was recently invited by Miu Miu to work with supermodels and walk the Paris runways. Vogue believes this marks a possible turning point in the ‘Golden Barbie’s’ career.
Keep an eye open–be on the look out as Sanders continues to break barriers in the fashion world. She’s a face of the new generation!
