Mara Brock Akil: Being Mary Jane Producer Shares Secrets for Creating Financial Security –
Mara Brock Akil began writing in 1994 on the Fox groundbreaking comedy-drama South Central. She has since gone on to write and produce megahits on shows like The Jamie Foxx Show, Moesha, and Cougar Town. Then there are the shows she’s created like Girlfriends, and the BET hit series, Being Mary Jane which she created with her husband, producer/director Salim Akil.
In a Black Enterprise interview, Mara shares her secrets for creating financial security at every stage of her career. She shares a message on how to financially sustain until hitting the big leagues.
She also describes that in her point of view, the concept of saving is not looked at as a negative or punishment, but instead as a sort of way to reach and achieve all that you want. “Happiness is what we want and money is one of the tools to get us there. It is not “The Tool.”
She and her husband live below their means and Mara shares the lesson on budgeting which she learned from her mother and grandmother. She mentions that the first part of a budget is paying yourself first.
