Tyler Perry Buys Fort McPherson Army Base site for $30 million –

According to Tyler Perry, “4 months ago I bought Fort McPherson Army Base. It’s the future home of the new Tyler Perry Studios. I’ll keep you posted on the progress, but just know that I’d like to thank all of you. From the 30 people who showed up for my first play 20 years ago, to the millions who stand with me faithfully today, “Thank you.” This dream belongs to all of us. My prayer for you is that everything that you have sewn into my life will come back to you 100 fold. Here we grow again!!!”

Atlanta INtown At a special meeting called by the McPherson Implementing Local Redevelopment Authority (MILRA), board members approved a resolution authorizing a memorandum of understanding on the sale of part of Fort McPherson to Tyler Perry Studios. The tentative $30 million agreement will allow Tyler Perry Studios to expand its production operations on 330 acres of the property, while allowing MILRA to retain over 144 acres for economic development purposes. No city funds would be used to close this transaction.

Tyler Perry Studios will build 15 0r 16 of sound stages on the decommissioned  Army base, which is expected to add over 8,000 new jobs to Atlanta, including the relocation of 350 jobs.  Additional green space, new streetscapes and transit improvements are also being negotiated.

“I am pleased that we reached an agreement that will help create long-term job creation, business expansion and community investment in Fort McPherson and its surrounding communities,” said Mayor Kasim Reed. “I want to personally thank Tyler Perry Studios for choosing the City of Atlanta as their permanent home for film and television production. I am confident that this kind of development will bring hundreds of permanent jobs into the area, and attract robust additional investment into the Southside of our city. It will also expand Atlanta’s footprint in television and film as well as strengthen our position as the cultural and economic center of the Southeast.”  Read more on this story…
