“America’s Team” the Dallas Cowboys are the Most Loved and Hated Team in the NFL –

Starting as far back as the 1970s,  the engaging stories surrounding the Dallas Cowboys has created a sensational love-hate relationship among the media and fans with “America’s Team.” Take a look at the headlines surrounding the Dallas Cowboy’s franchise and the topics are sure to get people talking. The Dallas Cowboys have a strong affiliation with attention and cling to it like a magnet to metal.

Many of us, who were old enough to remember falling in love with the NFL in the 1970s, may recall watching the Dallas Cowboys return to the Super Bowl during that decade time and time again, as if they were in a default mode setting.  During that period, the Cowboys were always knocking on the door to compete in the Super Bowl.  While the team soared in popularity, they played in five Super Bowls in a nine year span and you were either a die-hard fan and loved them all the way or you were just down right against them and hated every moment they were on the field.

The team got their nickname in 1978 when Bob Ryan, now Vice President and editor-in-chief of NFL Films, edited the team’s season highlight film and coined the Cowboys as “America’s Team.” Ryan was quoted as saying the following about the Cowboys:

“…I noticed then, and had noticed earlier, that wherever the Cowboys played, you saw people in the stands with Cowboys jerseys and hats and pennants. Plus, they were always the national game on television.”

So, when the Cowboys took to the field in 1979  against the St. Louis Cardinals, the commentator announced the team as “America’s Team” and the title has stuck ever since.

For six years from 2008 until 2014, the Cowboys were the most popular team in the NFL.  In 2014,  they were knocked off the throne by the Denver Broncos.  However, the Cowboys of 2015 have retaken the thrown and are back at the top of the Harris Poll again as “America’s Team.”

Ben Blatt of Deadspin points out, the franchise still dominates its NFL peers when it comes to Facebook “likes,” and a recent Emory University study cited by Michael Zennie of the Daily Mail found that the Cowboys have the league’s most loyal fanbase. Yet a survey of over 3,000 fans on Reddit showed that, again, the Cowboys are the most hated team in America.

So still, evidence supports that the Cowboys are considered both the most hated and most loved team in the NFL?  Love them or hate them, one thing remains the same.  The Dallas Cowboys will always be “America’s Team.”
