New Orleans Pelicans player Bryce Dejean-Jones was fatally shot in Dallas early Saturday after he accidentally entered the wrong apartment, reports CNN.
The Chicago native, who played as a rookie guard for the Pelicans, was in Texas to visit his girlfriend for his daughter’s first birthday, said his agent, Scott Nichols, the report says.
The incident occurred after a resident heard someone kick open the door of his apartment, police spokesman DeMarquis Black said in a statement.
The resident said “he called out to the individual, but was not answered,” and when the resident’s bedroom door was kicked open, the resident fired his gun, police said.
Dejean-Jones collapsed in the breezeway, police said. He was transported to a local hospital, where he died from his injuries, Black said.
This was the first time Dejean-Jones visited her new apartment, Nichols said. Later that night Dejean-Jones came back to the apartment complex but went to the wrong unit on the third floor, just below his girlfriend’s fourth-floor apartment, Nichols said.
Julie Keel, a spokeswoman for Camden Property Trust, the real estate company that owns the apartment complex in Dallas, confirmed that the complex’s apartment manager had sent out an email to residents saying that the person who had been shot had been trying to break into “the apartment of an estranged acquaintance” and that this person had “inadvertently” broken into the wrong apartment. –Abc13.com reports.
Black said he could not confirm that Dejean-Jones was trying to access an acquaintance’s apartment.
