Authentic or Nah? There are multitudes of plot lines that weave in and out of the Netflix original series ‘The Get Down.’  Headlined with a cast of young unknown, but impressive actors, this series has a authenticity and infectious energy.   This music-driven drama series chronicles the birth of hip-hop and the last days of disco -– told through the lives, music, art and dance with an African-American and Latino cast.    A group of  South Bronx kids with lots of music and nostalgia takes viewers back to New York in 1977 as they set out to change the world.

The cast:  Shameik Moore (Shaolin Fantastic), Justice Smith (Ezekiel “Books” Figuero), Herizen Guardiola (Mylene Cruz), Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (Cadillac), Jaden Smith (Dizzee Kipling), Skylan Brooks (Ra-Ra Kipling), Tremaine Brown Jr. (Boo Boo Kiping), Mamoudou Athie (Grandmaster Flash), Jimmy Smits (Francisco “Papa Fuerte” Cruz) and Giancarlo Esposito (Ramon Cruz).

Ezekiel (Justice Smith) writes poetic lyrics hoping to woo his beloved Mylene (Herizen Guardiola), a church-raised teen who yearns to become “the next Donna Summer,” and given her insanely good voice, just might be.
