Fashion expert and Editor of Mimi G. Style, Mimi Goodwin was born in Puerto Rico and moved to Chicago with her mom at the age of two. Growing up she recalls never actually feeling pretty. Constantly being told she was either too skinny, too light, or that her hair was ugly really took a toll on her.
“I didn’t feel pretty back then. I wasn’t really until my later adulthood that I understood what being beautiful meant,” Goodwin said in an interview with Simone Digital.
At the age of 17, she started working and while in Burbank, California she found herself in a situation with four children and the responsibility of being the sole provider for her household.
Drowning under the pressure of raising a family and holding down a full time job, Mimi G. turned to blogging as a creative outlet and a way to escape the mundane.
“I started sewing when I was probably 12. My aunt is a seamstress, she does bridal gowns. I was completely taken over by it and I would sit in there and I would watch her. Eventually I got my own machine and I started making all of my own clothes which was a trial and error kind of thing and it really wasn’t until my late 20’s that I decided that I was going to try to take it serious. I couldn’t afford Prada so I’d look at it and make my own Prada. I continued my road in sewing when I realized how many other young women found sewing interesting but they thought it was like an old person’s thing to do or crafty. So I took what I was doing and turned it into something fashionable, something that everyone could learn to do, and that is my main goal – teaching. I love to teach.” – Simone Digital.
Her breakthrough and inspirational moment for turning her hobby into a lucrative business happened when she posted a photo online of a skirt she made and people pinned it on Pinterest. People e-mailed her asking where they could get the skirt. She decided to start teaching people how to make it. And that is how MimiGStyle.com and the Mimi G. Style brand got wings and took flight.
Currently, she hosts her popular Fashion, Lifestyle, and DIY blog, MimiGStyle.com, as well as the Mimi G Style YouTube Channel, which houses tutorials, fashion and beauty tips, health and fitness videos, product reviews and more.
