Actor Mike Colter plays Luke Cage, a crime fighting former convict with superhuman strength and unbreakable skin.
When an experiment goes wrong, Colter’s character, Luke Cage emerges as a superhuman and becomes a fugitive who attempts to rebuild his life in Harlem. Colter, was originally reluctant to take the role because of all the blaxploitation.
“When I saw the tiara, all the 1970s blackspoitation stuff, I was like, ‘oh my God…’ But they assured me, ‘that’s not what we’re doing, we’re doing a modern day version.’ But yeah, [Luke Cage is] production-codenamed ‘Tiara’. It’s so funny. We’re gonna give them what they want, though,” Colter told ComicBook.com.
Colter told Esquire that he hopes that Netflix’s Luke Cage series will help raise awareness of the racial problems plaguing our country. Luke Cage has his roots in Blaxploitation and Colter felt it was important for his super hero character to be cool, confident, and hopefully sexy.
“…What I had to do with that was leave it where it was. It was important to pay homage to that Luke Cage, but to know that what we were going to make was going to be completely different and not have obligations that the original comic had set for us. The use of the same characters and the same tone—the hero being cool and confident and, hopefully sexy—we wanted to bring all of that back but in a modern way.”
