A recent study shows that Uber and Lyft drivers have been observed in discriminating via more frequent cancellations against passengers who have black sounding names. The study was conducted by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) in Cambridge, Massachussetts,
This news is very disturbing about how black passengers are being treated by transportation companies like Uber and Lyft.
How the study was conducted: In Seattle, WA and Boston, MA they sent passengers to hail nearly 1,500 rides on controlled routes and recorded key performance metrics. The results were a pattern of discrimination, which they observed in Seattle through longer waiting times for black passengers.
In Boston, discrimination by Uber drivers was observed via more frequent cancellations against passengers when they used black sounding names.
Drivers tended to cancel rides for individuals with black sounding more than twice as frequent as compared to white sounding names.
They also found evidence that drivers took female passengers for significantly longer, more expensive, rides.
