“Mania” is a 12 minute short film created by the Weeknd that features several songs from his album, Starboy that hit store shelves on Friday. “Mania” was released via YouTube on the 23rd of November. The film was directed by Grant Singer and the visual piece takes viewers on a journey with the Weeknd traveling the hillside in a Maclaren P1 and singing of his success story, boasting lyrics– “Homeless to Forbes list/Too many people think they made me/ Well if they really made me then replace me…” The film transitions between a scenic joy ride, a dim lit club scene, and a murder.

The shy Ethiopian kid from Toronto whose given birth name is Abel Tesfaye, has entertained very few interviews and reportedly cultivated a near-mythical image as a bed-hopping, pill-popping, chart-topping cipher.

Tesfaye has come a long way from his early childhood beginnings where he admits to being a weed smoking high school drop out. He started smoking weed in middle school and was kicked out of school at age 17. He was even homeless for a while and moved on from weed to painkillers, Xanax, cocaine, mushrooms, and ketamine. “I never needed detox or anything,” he said recently. “But I was addicted in the sense of ‘Fuck, I don’t want to spend this day without getting high.” – GQ
