Ending, Losing, and Letting Go – Life is all about Change – Emotional Video

Derek_RedmondDuring the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona, Great Britain’s 400 meter runner, Derek Redmond was a favorite to win gold, but instead he tore his hamstring in the 400 meter semi-final. At the very moment Derek went to the ground in pain, change had just impacted his life.  For a few moments he kneeled on the track while fear, denial, anger, sadness, frustration, uncertainty, and a feeling of loss overcame him.  At this point, I would have to believe Derek was struggling internally to accept that his Olympic hopes at a medal had ended and he had to accept that fact before he could begin to gather the courage and strength to finish the race.

He continued the race limping in pain. With assistance from his father, he managed to complete a full lap of the track as the crowd gave him a standing ovation. The long walk around the track with his father by his side was strong reminder of how all of us can us a helping hand from family and friends.   Derek’s father was there to guide him during an uncomfortable and seemingly unproductive time when it seemed that little progress was being made. The incident has become a well-remembered moment in Olympic history.  It has been the subject of one of the International Olympic Committee’s ‘Celebrate Humanity’ videos and has been used in advertisements by Visa as an illustration of the Olympic spirit and has been featured Nike’s “Courage” commercials.

Author William Bridges explains in his book, Managing Transitions that change just happens to people, but transitions are internal.  Transition is what is going on inside one’s mind when one is presented with change.   I chose the video of Derek Redmond’s Incredible Olympic Story because in some ways it illustrates Bridge’s Model of Change:

There will always be an ending.  At some point we will all lose.  And at some point in life we must all let Go.

Hopefully, this video will uplift and remind us all that in turbulent times of change,  we need one another.
