According to MadameNoire

Taraji P. Henson left the hit CBS show in 2013 when her character was killed off in order to save lead character John Reese (played by Jim Caviezel).  When her last episode aired, many fans were sad and turned off by Henson’s departure, saying they wouldn’t tune in after her exit. But good news for Person of Interest fans: Carter is back!

Well, she’s back temporarily.

Since leaving the program, Henson’s career has skyrocketed thanks to her role as Cookie on Fox’s Empire. The show was the first in 23 years to have viewership increase continuously from week-to-week, and season two is already in the works. As the show’s soundtrack hits number one and the stars cover magazines, CBS decided that they wanted Henson back. They recently invited Henson back to Person of Interest, and she’s accepted the opportunity to reappear on the program for one episode.
