Kilo Carter: Rapper Wins The 2015 Best Upcoming Artist Award for Northeast Louisiana – Written by Leroy Carter
Kilo Carter is an American rapper best known for his remarkable take on life throughout the rough streets of Monroe, Louisiana. Kilo was recently announced as The 2015 Best Upcoming Artist of Northeast Louisiana. With a diverse fan base and following, Carter was able to skyrocket his music career by performing throughout the United States at major night clubs and exclusive events across the south including sold out performances with industry artists such as Pleasure P, Mr. Magic(RIP), Slim Thug, Blood Raw, Trina, Diamond, Level, Louisiana Cash, and Trai’D.
Kilo Carter (Justyn Cooper) was born and raised in Monroe, Louisiana. While experiencing a rough childhood of poverty, violence, and crime in the gritty streets of the south side also known as “Zone 3,” Carter began refocusing the negativity in his life and began putting his life experiences into creating music at the young age of 11.
Kilo stated, “I’ve always been an introvert. So I used the music as a way to vent about my life and situations that I’ve witnessed. Coming from a state where it’s hard to make it and everyone has a dream but don’t to many make it out to live there dreams”
Always dreaming of becoming a well renowned rap artist, Carter was musically influenced growing up by such artists as 2Pac, The Notorious B.I.G., NWA, & Flexxy Roe. At the age of 12, Carter dropped his first single “Bring it back” featuring Drewskii, Flexxy Roe, and Reo. Later that year Carter and his cousin, Drewskii collaborated and they began recording their first mix tape as a duo, self-titled “Hood Hounds Entertainment.”
Shortly following the release of their single, Carter booked his first show in Tallulah, Louisiana under T&G Management. Carter and DrewSKii parted ways with T&G Management and signed under their own self-made label, Gunnah Entertainment LLC formally known as YG Entertainment.
In 2010, after their debut hit single “She Want A YG Nigga,” Gunnah Entertainment started the biggest movement to hit Northeast Louisiana. Followed with their most anticipated mix tape, The YG Movement Vol. 1 hosted by Louisiana Go DJ Star which was released in 2011.
Since the start of his career, Carter has collaborated with some of the hottest artists in the region. He has been debuted and featured on several mix tapes such as The YG Movement Vol. 1 & 2, Gunz & Butter, Touch Cash , YNBL hosted By Go Dj Star . While networking with other labels such as Touch Cash Enterprise, Money Rules, Hood Hound Ent., Crunk House Ent., Flyy Pham Music, and Above Average Entertainment, Kilo Carter grew as an artist and so did the diversity of his fan base across several states.
